Whistler, BC: Whistler Sport Legacies will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games 2010 with a three-day activation at Whistler Olympic Park over Family Day weekend, February 15-17, 2020. With that, the non-profit organization wants to thank the community for contributing to the ongoing success of Whistler’s three Olympic legacy venues, Whistler Olympic Park, the Whistler Sliding Centre and the Whistler Athletes’ Centre. Whistler Sport Legacies took over the venues from VANOC after the conclusion of the Games in 2010.
Saturday, February 15 will be the main activation day, featuring free access for 2010 Games volunteers, the opportunity to try Olympic sports, watch sport demonstrations or meet an Olympic mascot:
- All day on February 15, “Blue Jackets”, the volunteers during the 2010 Games, will receive FREE entry to Whistler Olympic Park if they wear their volunteer uniform, or bring other proofs of their volunteerism during the 2010 Games, such as accreditation passes.
- “Experience Biathlon”, the park’s public biathlon program, will be available for only $10/person from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on February 15 (minimum age 10). Young biathletes of the park’s Whistler Nordic Development Centre will run the activity, and all proceeds go to the athletes’ development.
- Children and youth (ages 7+) will be able to try “Snow Luge” for free, presented by the Whistler Sliding Centre’s luge coaching team (10:00am to 2:00pm). Participants can also learn how children, youth and adults can get involved in luge, skeleton and bobsleigh. The free Snow Luge activity will be offered daily from February 15-17.
- An interactive demonstration will challenge visitors to try specialized biathlon rifles used by visually impaired Para athletes
- Demonstration of adaptive Nordic skiing, showcasing options for individuals with disabilities
- Regular park activities cross country skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing, biathlon, sightseeing
- And more!
On BC Family Day, Monday February 17, the park will offer its traditional Family Day discount, 50% off all ski and snowshoe trail tickets. The discount applies to trail tickets purchased on site at the gates only.
All weekend, there will be photo opportunities with the Olympic podium, the chance to meet an Olympic mascot and an exhibit with Olympic mementos in the Day Lodge.
President and CEO Roger Soane is thankful for the support that the Olympic legacy venues have received over the past decade: “We want to invite our community to enjoy the legacy venues. Every day, the spirit of the Games lives on in our team. We introduce our sports to all ages and see locals and visitors enjoy themselves on the snow and ice and get inspired. We grow athletes and see our local “legacy babies” succeed and become the next generation of Olympians. Our mission is to Grow Sport, and we could not do what we do without the daily support of the Sea to Sky community, our guests, volunteers, clubs and partners.”
