Whistler, BC: Which sport will your child try this winter season? Whistler Sport Legacies has just released its youth program lineup for 2018/2019, with many options for children and youth of all skill levels to participate in exciting Olympic sports. “Our goal is to offer quality programming at an affordable rate, with expert coaches for all programs”, explains Lucinda Jagger, Sport Vice President of Whistler Sport Legacies. Programs include the Olympic legacy sports sliding and nordic and multi-sport options, varying from one-time sessions to introduce participants to new sports, over one- or multi-day camps to weekly/seasonal programs. Depending on the discipline, programs are held either at the Whistler Sliding Centre, at Whistler Olympic Park, the Whistler Athletes’ Centre or at third party locations in Whistler.

The Whistler Sliding Centre offers introductory one-time Discover sessions for luge (8+ years), skeleton (14+ years) and u-drive bobsleigh (16+ years) for children and youth to get a taste of the sliding sports, no prior experience is needed. Those that want more practice with consistent coaching can join the weekly luge, skeleton and bobsleigh programming, open to novices as well as more advanced sliders. The Centre will also offer 3- and 5-day skeleton and bobsleigh pilot schools, which will teach participants the basic skills and techniques needed to pilot their own sleds down the track.

At Whistler Olympic Park, children and youth get introduced to Nordic skiing in multi-sport sessions and camps that include not only cross-country skiing, but also biathlon, ski jumping and more. Programs and camps will utilize the designated Nordic ski play area, which schools balance and skills on varied terrain features. Nordic multi-sport programs are available as 3-/4-day camps during Winter & Spring Break, as well as weekly on Saturdays in January and February. Also ski jumping will be available as a multi-session program through the season, in which participants go through a progression of dryland and on-snow skills, leading to jumps on the 20 and 40 meter junior hills.

In addition to Nordic and sliding sports, Whistler Sport Legacies also offers multi-sport programming to grow overall physical literacy for all age groups. The PLAYTots program schools toddlers’ (1 to 3 years) basic movement skills. Pro D-day multi-sport camps let grades 2 to 6 get active on a day out of school, with a different sport for each Pro-D day in the school year 2018/2019. The popular Olympic Mondays camp in January and February introduce youth (grades 4 to 7) to seven different Olympic sports on six Mondays. Athletes of all sports (grades 7+) can participate in Multi-Sport Athletic Training sessions and Athlete Performance Workshops to improve their overall athletic abilities.
