New President and CEO for Whistler Sport Legacies
Whistler, BC: Jim Godfrey, Board Chair of Whistler Sport Legacies, announced today that Roger Soane has accepted the role of President and CEO. Originally from London, England Roger Soane brings almost 40 years of international operational experience spanning the globe, managing iconic properties with complex operations and facilities. In Whistler, Roger was with Fairmont Hotels and Resorts as General Manager of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler for three years, and for the past year, he has been the GM of the Nita Lake Lodge. Roger has also served as Chairman of the Board of Tourism Victoria and is currently serving his third year as Chairman of the Board of Tourism Whistler.
Jim Godfrey is very pleased about attracting one of Whistler’s most respected leaders: “Roger’s depth of experience will help lead Whistler Sport Legacies to achieve our Sport Vision of becoming one of the leading sport centres in Canada. The Board is very much looking forward to working with Roger,” said Godfrey. Roger Soane experienced the 2010 Olympic Winter Games first-hand, so he’s committed to ensuring Canadians continue to feel the pride and harness the energy needed to support the next generation of elite athletes by building partnerships for benefit of sport. Roger also believes in the importance of WSL facilitating competitions at all levels through event management support at world-class facilities for an enhanced spectator experience. Roger will lead WSL’s team as it contributes to the community through youth sport development, support for a variety of community groups, and activities and programs that enhance Whistler’s tourism product.
Roger Soane welcomes the opportunity to lead the WSL team: “sport has played a big part in my life and helped shape me as a person. I am excited to now be in a position where I can help others achieve their goals in sport, and lead a team to achieve operational excellence and fiscal sustainability,” said Soane. Roger will join Whistler Sport Legacies on February 18, 2013.
Roger is married to Karen and they have three young children Luke, Ella, and Darby. His favourite recreational activities are those he can do with his family.
Whistler Sport Legacies is a non-profit organization responsible for Whistler Olympic Park, the Whistler Sliding Centre, and the Whistler Athletes’ Centre. Each facility plays a unique role in inspiring sport excellence for the benefit of athletes, residents, and visitors.
