Elite biathlon athletes train in High Performance Camps at Whistler Olympic Park
Whistler, BC: British Columbia’s next generation of elite biathlon athletes are training at Whistler Olympic Park this summer. During High Performance Biathlon Camps, which are held by Whistler Sport Legacies in co-operation with Biathlon BC, top-level athletes from all over the Province are refining their skills at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games venue in July and August.
In the two-week camps, the young athletes between the ages of 15 and 19 are introduced to the life of world-class biathletes, exercising in a training centre environment with all-day training support and guidance from professional coaches. Their schedule consists of daily physical and technical coaching, shooting practice, strength and conditioning, and recovery and regeneration sessions. The coaches use physiological and field testing as well as video analysis and individual training plans to assess and increase the athletes’ performance. As well, nutritional education and mental performance coaching are part of the program. The young biathletes stay at the Whistler Athletes’ Centre and benefit from the high performance training and lodging facility.
The young athletes are expected to represent British Columbia and Canada in top-level competitions on the national and international stage in the coming years. Some of them could already celebrate important achievements in their athletic careers, such as gold medals at the Canada Winter Games or medals at National Biathlon Championships. The camps are part of Whistler Sport Legacies’ initiative to grow sport in the Sea to Sky Corridor and to contribute to British Columbia’s and Canada’s success in international elite competition.
Camps are held from July 20 to August 2 and from August 17 to 30. Spectators are welcome ($10/carload park entry fee applies), visitors ages 8 years and up can even experience biathlon themselves at the Olympic biathlon range and, with guidance from a qualified instructor, shoot an authentic 22 caliber biathlon rifle on the 115mm or 45mm diameter targets.
