Whistler, BC: Whistler Olympic Park will be part of the world-wide event “World Snow Day” on January 20, 2019. The day will feature fun, free Nordic ski and snow activities for kids and youth, such as a guided ski orienteering course, an introduction to ski jumping and all-day access to the park’s ski play area with terrain features to practice balance and ski skills. The day’s program is designed to help children and youth develop confidence and snow literacy, and to try new activities on snow. Participation in all World Snow Day activities is free, regular ticket and rental costs apply.
For the guided ski orienteering, kids 12 and under will meet up with a guide and embark on a tour on classic cross country skis (ages 8 & under require parent participation). At different stations throughout the park, fun snow challenges or skill testing questions await the participants. The activity will be offered twice, in the morning from 10:30-11:30am and in the afternoon from 12:30-1:30am. The activity is free, pre-registration is not required. Some skiing experience is recommended, meeting point is at the countdown clock outside the Day Lodge.
Children and youth 8 to 14 years old who want to try ski jumping can participate in a "Bumps to Jumps" beginner session on skate skis. Each participant will receive coaching on the foundation progressions to learn ski jumping skills in the Ski Play and "Hoppers" jumping area. Two sessions are available, one from 10:30am to 12:00pm and one from 12:30 to 2:00pm. The activity is free, pre-registration is advised (per email to lbrougham@whistlersportlegacies.com). Some alpine or Nordic skiing experience is recommended, meeting point is at the countdown clock.
“World Snow Day” is an annual event under the direction of the International Ski Federation FIS, created to bring more children and youth to the snow and to grow participation in snow sports.
