Whistler, BC – Even though natural snowfall has been limited so far this year, Whistler Olympic Park will open its gates as scheduled this Thursday, November 22.

At minimum, cross-country skiers will be able to ski on “Callaghan Gold”, a one kilometre loop located adjacent to Whistler Olympic Park’s biathlon range. The loop is made out of natural snow that was preserved from the previous season under sawdust. It will be open for skate skiing only and is suitable for intermediate and advanced skiers (not recommended for beginners). “We primarily created this loop for early season athlete training starting end of October. Now it enables us to provide snow access to the public, while we are waiting for natural snow which may come later this week, it is hard to predict”, explains Tim Hope, Managing Director of Whistler Olympic Park. The ski terrain anticipated for this weekend will be at minimum Callaghan Gold until more natural snow flies. Skiers can access the trail with a season pass or for the early season rate of $15/day through Whistler Olympic Park’s main gate.

The Day Lodge with the sport school, restaurant, rental and retail shop will also be open Thursday. Private lessons are available, and the “Experience Biathlon” activity will be offered on weekends. Snowshoeing and tobogganing are not available yet until more natural snow is available. Opening hours are 9:00am to 4:30pm Mondays to Fridays and 8:30am to 4:30pm on weekends.
