Whistler, BC – Despite the lack of natural snowfall on the west side of the Coast Mountains, Whistler Olympic Park will open its gates as scheduled this Friday, November 22.
Cross-country skiers will be able to ski on “Callaghan Gold”, a one kilometre trail located adjacent to Whistler Olympic Park’s biathlon range. The loop is made out of natural snow that was preserved from the previous season under sawdust. It will be open for classic and skate skiing and is suitable for intermediate and advanced skiers (not recommended for beginners). Skiers can access the trail with a season pass or for the early season rate of $18/day through Whistler Olympic Park’s main gate. Rentals are available with an early season discount of 50% off.
The Day Lodge with the sport school, rental and retail shop will be open starting Friday. Private lessons are available, and the “Experience Biathlon” activity will be offered on weekends. On Saturday and Sunday, the Café will be open from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Snowshoeing and tobogganing are not available yet until more natural snow is available. Opening hours are 9:00am to 4:30pm Mondays to Fridays and 8:30am to 4:30pm on weekends.
Tim Hope, Managing Director of Whistler Olympic Park, is happy that the public will be able to get on snow this weekend as planned: “Every year we create our Callaghan Gold loop primarily so that our athletes can start their on-snow training early, but now we’re able to open it up to public skiers as well.”
More terrain will be opened up as natural snow flies. Regularly check the conditions website to confirm opening hours, conditions, available terrain and activities.
