Ski Callaghan opens this Thursday, November 27, on limited terrain; Extended Early Bird Rate
Whistler, BC – Cross-country skiers in the Sea to Sky area can get their gear ready, even though the Snow God Ullr hasn’t been out West yet! Ski Callaghan, the joint venture between Whistler Sport Legacies/Whistler Olympic Park and Callaghan Country Wilderness Adventures, will open as planned for the public this Thursday, November 27.
Until more natural snow flies, the terrain will be limited to the 900 meter loop that Whistler Olympic Park created the first week of November near the Biathlon Range for early season athlete training. The Park stored last season’s snow under sawdust over the summer, making ‘Callaghan Gold’ the first natural snow storage project in North America. Skiers can access the trail with a season pass or for the early season rate of $10/day. Access to the ‘Callaghan Gold’ loop is possible through Whistler Olympic Park’s main gate. Dog owners are allowed to take their pooches for a walk on ‘Porter’s Glide’.
The trail will be open daily between 9:00am and 4:30pm as of Thursday, but the ski loop will be closed to the public for a sport event on the morning of Sunday, November 30 (see below). Whistler Olympic Park’s Day Lodge with the sport school, rental, and retail shop will also be open Thursday. The Lodge’s restaurant will open for the season on Saturday, November 29, and Callaghan Country’s Journeyman Lodge will open on Friday, December 12. Snowshoeing and tobogganing will be possible once more natural snow is available.
Wednesday night skiing (until 9:00pm) on Whistler Olympic Park’s ‘Callaghan Gold’ will commence on December 3 at a special rate of $5 each for trail access, rentals, food and beverages starting at 3:00pm.
Opening Weekend Events
Whistler Olympic Park’s opening weekend features two special events: On Saturday, November 29 at 1:00pm there will be a bonfire at the top of the tobogganing slope on the ski jump outrun as an homage paid to the Viking God of Snow Ullr. On Sunday, November 30, the “Coast Cup” will kick off the sport season with almost 100 athletes from ages 5 and older. During the morning of the event, access to the 900m loop will be for athletes only, public can access the loop from 1:00pm onwards.
