Small Engine Mechanic / Equipment Operator

Whistler Olympic Park is an outdoor recreation destination located in the Callaghan Valley, just south of Whistler. Public visitors enjoy recreational cross country skiing, snowshoeing and more on more than 120 kilometres of trails. True to its mission to grow sport, athletes of all levels appreciate the park’s state of the art training and competition facilities for cross country skiing, biathlon, ski jumping and Nordic combined.

Summer season dual role - July 18, 2022 to October 30, 2022:  
Small Engine Mechanic  Equipment Operator  

Small Engine Mechanic supports the Supervisor Mechanical Maintenance / Snow Clearing in maintaining primarily the ATV, snowmobile and snow blower fleet as well as assisting in the maintenance of motor vehicles, heavy equipment, snow cats and other such machinery.  

Equipment Operator is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of all outdoor trails, roads and parking lots at Whistler Olympic Park.  Good care of machinery and attention to detail are required to be successful in this position. 

Temporary Full Time role requires flexibility to work weekends and nights and may transition into a winter season role.  Ask about accommodation.

Main responsibilities for each role - request full Position Description at initial interview:

Small Engine Mechanic

  • Ensure operation of small engine fleet by completing preventive maintenance requirements and troubleshoot malfunctions while adhering to protocols
  • Prepare fleet maintenance, preventative maintenance systems, and schedules as required
  • Assist Mechanic and/or Millwright with maintenance of road fleet, heavy equipment, and snow cats
  • Perform daily checks including pre start up inspections, fueling procedures, shut down and post operational procedures including documentation regarding vehicle maintenance per established protocols
  • Ensure a high standard in all finished work is maintained utilizing cost effective measures
  • Operate all equipment in a safe and responsible manner

Education/Experience

  • 1-3 years’ experience working on small engines, preferably off road vehicles primarily
  • Heavy equipment operating experience an asset
  • WHMIS certification required
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License required
  • Valid BC Class 4 Driver’s License an asset
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 an asset

Equipment Operator

  • Work with and under Supervisor, Trails and Roads to ensure all outdoor trails, roads and parking lots are maintained
  • Operate heavy equipment and trucks in a safe and responsible manner
  • Operate machinery for event preparation and track hours for billing purposes
  • Assist mechanics with machinery maintenance and repairs
  • Build and maintain recreational trails

Education/Experience

  • 1-3 years experience operating heavy machinery
  • Air Brake endorsement preferred
  • Keen and can-do attitude
  • OFA Level 1 to 3 certification an asset

Physical requirements for dual role

  • Reliable winter transportation (WOP is not serviced by transit)
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions while performing labour intensive duties
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to regularly lift 50lbs
