Assistant Nordic Coach

Assistant Nordic Coach works collaboratively with all Whistler Sport Legacies’ colleagues in the delivery of a quality sport environment and programs at Whistler Olympic Park.  This role delivers sport (coaching) services to Whistler Nordic Development Centre team and on demand to local clubs and provincial sport organizations within a team structure to grow sport development in the Sea to Sky corridor.  Reporting to the Biathlon Head Coach, Nordic Technical Advisor this role drives WSL sport growth and is committed to facilitate and develop Nordic sport in accordance with the WSL mission, vision, and values.  This Seasonal Part Time role requires flexibility to assist the team with other activities or initiatives (Sport Coaching) including flexibility to work evenings, holidays, and weekends as required.

Sport Coach/Wax Technician

  • In Conjunction with the Head Coach, develop, implement, and monitor the annual training plan for the WNDC team
  • Under the supervision of the Head Coach, act as lead coach for the Satelite Summer Program
  • Assist the Head Coach, and when required assist other partner team leaders, to organize and implement training camps
  • Act as team leader to maximize WNDC team performance, when required
  • Provide high performance waxing service to WNDC Team for races
  • Support the delivery of an appropriate field of play for training activities
  • Provide ski equipment technical expertise as requested
  • Work cooperatively with clubs, sport user groups, and volunteers to deliver community sport programming
  • Assist Sport Coaches/volunteers in day-to-day operations and develop daily planning of activities and priorities
  • Liaise with WSL and all other venue colleagues for day-to-day operations
  • Provide training and skill development to Sport School coaches
  • Liaise with grooming staff to ensure appropriate machine snow preparation is complete prior to final manual snow preparation
  • Ensure a safe and inviting environment for activity participants and guests
  • Adhere to safe operating procedures within the functional areas
  • Foster a strong culture of health and safety; work with Human Resources, and Safety to ensure that all WorkSafeBC and BC Safety Authority requirements are met
  • Knowledge of WSL product and services to assist promotion and cross-promotion when interacting with guests and clients
  • Interact with volunteers to ensure their inclusion in department team
  • Carry out WSL’s customer service philosophy AIM:  All Interactions Matter
  • Assist team with other duties as assigned or required including instructing individuals, groups, and athletes in all WOP Nordic products as required

Administration

  • Maintain individual/group attendance and achievement records
  • Assist the Head Coach with WNDC team administrative duties including bookings, communication with athletes/parents, reporting, planning, logistics, and expenses

Position Requirements

Education/Experience

  • Experience and skills as a cross-country skier; performing both classic and skate techniques
  • Experience and skills as a Biathlete and/or as Biathlon Coach
  • Minimum certification required:
    • Cross Country Canada’s National Coaching Certification (NCCP)
      • Competition Coaching:  Introduction (CCI-L2T)
    • Biathlon Canada Coaching Certification (NCCP)
      • Competition Introduction Certified
      • Competition Development trained and/or a clear plan leading towards certification within two (2) years
  • Satisfactory criminal record check including vulnerable sector check is mandatory prior to commencement of employment
  • Wax technician experience required
  • Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) is mandatory
  • Valid BC Driver’s License is mandatory
  • Valid Unrestricted Class 4 Driver’s license an asset
  • First Aid certification preferred
  • Experience volunteering and/or working in a volunteer organization such as a not-for-profit sport organization an asset
  • Strong technical knowledge in Biathlon shooting and ski techniques an asset including demonstration of strong motivation to learn if one of these two coaching skills are not corresponding to high level standards

Skills

  • MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, with ability to maintain an up-to-date program database
  • Ability to safely guide participants through physical activities and training sessions
  • Capacity to plan appropriate training and competition programs for Nordic athletes
  • Self-starter with creative, resourceful, and entrepreneurial experience
  • Willingness to assist other team members (perhaps outside the department) as needed and requested
  • Passion for exceptional customer service is essential

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors for long periods of time in variable winter/summer weather conditions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Reliable winter transportation (WOP is not serviced by public transit)
