Assistant Chief Engineer, Refrigeration

Whistler Sliding Centre is a world-class bobsleigh, skeleton and luge facility located above Whistler Village on the side of Blackcomb Mountain. True to its mission to grow sport, the venue is not only used for training and competition by athletes from beginner to world class level, but it is also the only place in Canada where public can try bobsleigh and skeleton to slide like an Olympian with no experience required.

Assistant Chief Engineer, Refrigeration is part of a dedicated team responsible for the operation and maintenance of Whistler Sliding Centre facilities and the Ammonia Refrigeration Plant.  
This role works directly with the Refrigeration, Facility Operations, Track Operations and the Guest Services departments as part of a team that provides a world class training and competition venue.
  This Regular Full Time position requires flexibility with other activities or initiatives including working evenings and weekends as required.

Responsibilities

Supervisory

  • Assume duties in absence of Chief Engineer as directed
  • Assist with the development and implementation of an annual operations plan, capital maintenance plan, capital replacement plan, and budget for the functional area while ensuring that all work is conducted in accordance with the approved plans and budget according to established financial procedures
  • Coordinate with Chief Engineer to ensure that all regulatory requirements are met
  • Respond to emergency situations, resolving immediate safety and/or operational concerns to ensure minimal work interruption and safe operations
  • Supervise all operational resources pertaining to the Refrigeration Plant, site security, water quality and building maintenance
  • At all times, ensure activities of the Refrigeration Plant are guided by WSL vision, mission and values and in accordance with the Business Plan and Annual Operating Plans
  • Supervise Refrigeration Plant team as needed and required including providing leadership, orientation, training, and direction
  • Base and carry out decisions in the best interest of WSC with an understanding and consideration of the overall organizational interest
  • Flexibility to work weekends and evenings

  • Assist WSL team with other duties as assigned or needed

Technical

  • Ensure Refrigeration Plant and building operations are performed safely and efficiently in accordance with municipal, provincial and federal regulations, and laws including but not limited to Work Safe BC and Technical Safety BC
  • Monitor and operate Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems for buildings and Refrigeration Plant
  • Perform routine maintenance work such as painting, HVAC maintenance, basic plumbing, mechanical systems inspection, monitoring of building systems, tracking and reporting of preventative tasks for all WSC buildings
  • Cooperate with and support the work of the Joint Health and Safety Committee, Work Safe BC, and Technical Safety BC
  • Foster and support a WSC “safety first” culture including the plant, and ensure all staff adhere to safety procedures
  • May be assigned sled transportation, guest shuttle driving, ice preparation, and/or snow removal
  • Assist with the execution of special events as required

Position Requirements

Minimum Education/Experience

  • College/University/Trades education with relevant certifications
  • Certificate of Qualification for Refrigeration Systems, Refrigeration Operators Certificate, or higher required in the province of BC
  • Complete working knowledge of a refrigeration plant, including ammonia refrigeration systems, procedures, equipment, maintenance, proper operating conditions, and relevant HVAC systems
  • Knowledge of plant instrumentation and control systems (i.e. Delta Programs) preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ Refrigeration Operator experience preferred
  • Minimum 1 years’ Refrigeration experience as Assistant Chief an asset
  • General knowledge of the WSC venue, and the sports of Bobsleigh, Luge, Skeleton, as well as high performance training an asset
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license mandatory
  • Valid BC Class 4 Unrestricted driver’s license an asset

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and elevated heights
  • Ability to distinguish colours for monitoring alarms on all equipment, tools, and computers
  • Ability to wear and work while wearing a full face respirator
