Whistler Sliding Centre: Public Bobsleigh and Skeleton Programs start December 4

Monday, November 30, 2015

Whistler, BC: Whistler’s most unique adrenaline rush experience is available again. From December 4, 2015 until March 27, 2016, the Sliding Centre’s public bobsleigh and skeleton programs will be open to those who want to experience the thrilling sliding sports on the fastest ice track in the world.

During the bobsleigh ride ‘Thunder on Ice’, three passengers share a bobsleigh with a trained pilot who steers them through 10 of the 16 corners of the Whistler Sliding Centre track with speeds reaching up to 125 km/hr and an acceleration of up to 4 G forces in the final ‘Thunderbird’ corner. Those that don’t want to share a sled with others can try ‘Lightning on Ice’ and launch themselves head-first down the track on a skeleton sled. Participants of the skeleton experience go through six corners and reach speeds of up to 100 km/hr. The Whistler Sliding Centre is the only place in Canada where public can experience skeleton. Both public experiences include a thorough safety orientation and information about sliding sports before heading out on the track.

“We are excited to offer sliding programs to Whistler residents and visitors. We can showcase Olympic sports that are usually not accessible for the general public. Participants are proud that they are contributing to athlete success when they book their experience, as the revenue goes directly back into the sport,” explained Roger Soane, President and CEO of Whistler Sport Legacies, the not-for-profit organization running the Whistler Sliding Centre. The public programs are one of the organization’s key initiatives to grow sport, and money generated through public sliding in winter and summer goes immediately towards supporting athlete development, training and venue operations.

Rides are available for $169 plus tax for one bobsleigh ride with a pilot or for two solo skeleton rides per person (some physical and age restrictions apply). Individuals who book both experiences get a $100 discount. Bobsleigh and skeleton are not weather-dependent and run in all conditions. Advance booking is required and is possible online or by phone at 604-964-0040.
