New Snow makes for perfect Holidays at Whistler Olympic Park

Monday, December 14, 2015

Whistler, BC: Just in time for the holiday season, Whistler Olympic Park’s cross-country and snowshoe trail system is in great condition after the recent snowfall. ‘For our activities, we usually don’t need as deep of a base as downhill skiers or snowboarders, but the new snow enabled us to further improve our toboggan hill and our ski play features. And it simply makes our winter wonderland in the Callaghan Valley so much more festive”, says Tim Hope, Managing Director of Whistler Olympic Park.

Throughout the holidays, the Park will offer special activities to destination guests and locals.

Holiday hours between December 19 and January 3 are 9:00am until 4:30pm weekdays (on Wednesdays the Park is open until 9:00pm for night skiing) and 8:30am until 4:30pm on weekends. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, biathlon, tobogganing and (snow-dependent) baseboarding will be available.

The kid-friendly toboggan hill will be open with multiple lanes, and the bonfire will be lit daily for families that want to roast marshmallows (also available from Whistler Olympic Park’s restaurant). Sled and helmet rentals as well as access to the toboggan hill are free (with admission to the Park).

Starting December 19 (and daily throughout the season), a shuttle bus will be available for those who need transportation between Whistler Village and the Park. Spots need to be reserved in advance by phone at 604-964-0060. The cost for a return shuttle ride is $10/person; packages including trail tickets, ski/snowshoe rentals and lessons are also available, starting at $25.

Introductory cross-country ski and biathlon ‘Discover’ lessons are offered daily between December 19 and January 3. Those who want to get introduced to the classic technique, can join a 1.5 hour lesson from 11.30am – 1:00pm. Skate skiing, resembling the skating technique used on ice for hockey and speed skating, is taught from 1:30 – 3:00pm. Cross-country ski lessons cost $50/person, rental equipment is available for only $10 extra. An introduction to biathlon, the sport that combines rifle marksmanship and skiing, is available between 9:00 and 11:00am, ($75/person, rentals an extra $10). Marksmanship lessons at the Olympic shooting range (30 minutes, no skiing) are offered daily at 11.00 and 11:30am and on Wednesday nights ($20/person). Also private lessons for individuals and groups for all disciplines can be booked throughout the holidays.

Children and youth who want to discover Nordic skiing can sign up for a 3-day holiday camp. The full-day camp (December 28-30 from 9:30am until 3:30pm) is a great beginner introduction to activities like cross-country skiing, biathlon, the ski play/terrain park, snowshoeing and sledding, and are an important step in developing snow literacy. The 3-day camp costs $150 (including rentals) plus $25 for a discounted youth sport season pass.

The shuttle, all lessons and camps need to be pre-booked. More information and booking is available online or by phone at 604-964-0060.
